Guess The Weight

Postby Leigh » Thu Apr 23, 2020 10:08 pm

I came across three decent sized common carp, briefly, before they spooked.

Do we as anglers have the ability to determine what a fish may weigh even before it reaches the landing net?

I would be interested to know your thoughts - The 21-second video can be found by clicking the following link:

I find these videos very hard to judge, because I can't really get the scale of what I'm looking at without the wider context of distance etc. That's my excuse in early for probably being miles out with a guess.
That common in front does look very chunky and broard across the beam, I started thinking mid teens but now upping it to just 20+.
See what everyone else comes up with, I presume you are going to catch it for us to check - or have you done so already?

My guess for the largest one is 23 pounds.

Without any context, I'd say anywhere from 3-30lb...

Mr Mole, potentially at some point in the future. In the warmer months they are a joy to watch with my son as they lazily bask on the surface.

I have been to venues where people have commented there is a 30+ in here, but without capture how do they really know?

Thanks for the input so far.

Leigh, after lockdown You'll have to go and catch it for us. Don't forget the scales! I'd say lower 20s, but I really wouldn't have much of a clue. I don't come across enough big carp to be a good judge.

MD, the bonus of this venue is you are allowed to night fish. My son would also probably join me as he has been interested in catching a whopper for some time.

Unfortunately my work is taking me overseas in the coming months so I will miss any opportunity to go fishing this year as it's a six month contract. Will also miss the ability to pick up tackle related items from the car boot sales.

Apologies but the videos on all my links have been deleted.

Youtube analytics showed some interesting data, it knows too much. One piece of data revealed that 90% of my audience was outside of the UK. A cyber predator commented within minutes of all new posts to be friends and created several accounts repeating the same request. There are some strange people out there.

Thanks to those that looked anyway.
