F.T.W. rod..

Postby watermole+ » Sun Feb 03, 2019 6:58 pm

Hello to All,

Some time ago, a very kind gentleman gave a rod to me as he had no further use for it.

It is inscribed:- 'The Downton (?), F.T.W. (Williams?) "Craftsman" rod, Made in England'.

About 10 1/2 feet, 3-piece, the butt whole cane with s/c middle & top, very light and well balanced.

I would say it dates from the 1950s and is in absolutely original condition throughout. It has not been given any extra varnish or been messed about with.
The tyings are dark red on the rings and intermediates, though a little faded here and there as you would expect, but the ferrules are good (with original aluminium stoppers) and the cane is both very sound and remarkably straight! The bag has no makers label and may not be original.
The cork handle is a little dirty-but complete, without chipped cork or chunks missing etc. The ferrules have lost some of their bluing but are good, as is the rubber button.

The only fault is that the agate top eye is damaged and will need replacing, which is not a problem. My own opinion is that when the eye was damaged, the rod was put away and not used since. If it were not for that, I would confidently go fishing with with it today.

I have also been reducing the amount of fishing tackle owned and to be quite honest, it was a very kind and thoughtful gift-but one which I have no use for either. The top eye apart, it is a very nice and light fishing rod in totally original condition from when it was new.

If anyone would like it-and care to either collect, or pay a few shekels toward the postage and packing, please do send a message, or post on here.

Kind regards to all, :text-hat-tip:

Dear Watermole,

A certain Fatty would be very pleased to take the rod from your hands.

Collection might be a problem as you reside many miles from the Mole Fortress but if postage could be arranged shekels will be forwarded to you in advance thus avoiding the out of pocket syndrome; often a cause of much gnashing of teeth.

Hope this is acceptable :text-hat-tip:

J.A.A. ..you are a very cruel man..

..Brilliant! ..but very cruel lol

Moley, I could not think of a better home for this rod. Please send your postal name and address via PM and I will make arrangements with Wells Fargo, who still have an office in the far west..although Dale Robertson is no longer with us..

Spiffing result! :thumbs-up:

Scurrilous young JAA.......You are not the messiah, just a very naughty boy :oldmanrant:

Thank you watermole I shall look forward to putting a gentle bend in the venerable cane, maybe with a fine Gudgeon or three :gobio_gobio: or some nice dace. ;-)

Just to let you know The FTW, after the tip ring replaced and varnish dried (nearly), was used yesterday to trot down some grubs to this hungry blighter who put more than a gentle bend in the venerable cane.

However, The Mole, for it is he, is happy to report both cane and angler came through with flying colours once Fatty had sorted out which way to wind the Trudex paired with the rod......it's an age thing :text-hat-tip:

Not bad for a old'un, in both cases.......4lb 1oz weighed by the Ancient Mariner, who also commented about the Golden Anatomy of the tea slurpin', pie scoffing Mole. lol

Thank you again Watermole; this rod is a definite user.....oh yes!

No straight rod syndrome here Young JAA :oldmanrant:
